Wedding cakes - points to consider
- Fruit cakes are the traditional base for celebration cakes although more and more clients are opting for sponge bases. Fruit cakes provide a solid base, more portions for the same size of cake than a sponge and allow more time for decoration.
- Sponge cakes have to be baked as close as possible to the day of the celebration and this can compromise the amount of time available for decorating. Your cake maker will be able to advise you on what can and cannot be achieved within the timescale.
- Sponge cakes have the advantage of coming in lots of different flavours!
- Look through wedding magazines and on websites to try to get an idea of the sort of style you and your partner would like. If not, then an idea of colour and shape is a good starting point when meeting your cake maker.
- Always make sure you sample cake bases - some cake makers use commercially baked cake bases or you may want to adjust flavours.
- Book your cake maker as early as possible - Cake designers can get very busy at certain times of the year and booking early also allows time to get the design right.
- Start with the look you want and worry about the number of portions later - cake makers can make extra cake or use dummy tiers to ensure that you get both right.
- Getting your cake maker to deliver your cake may seem like an unneccessary expense but can ease the stress on a busy day. Your cake maker will make sure the cake looks perfect, is set up correctly and will inform the caterers of any special instructions such as keeping the top tier.
